Density

The concentration of an ethanol/water solution is closely related to the density of the solution, making an Anton Paar density transmitter an ideal instrument for monitoring ethanol concentration on-line. These transmitters provide a 4-20mA output, can be integrated into a profibus network, and are available in different materials.

The on-line monitoring of the concentration of ethanol at the final stages of ethanol production is crucial. If ethanol has significant amounts of water in it (5% is a significant amount) its molecular structure will make it act more like water when mixed with hydrocarbon solutions such as petrol. When "wet" ethanol is mixed with petrol, the mixture will separate out with all the ethanol settling to the bottom of the vessel and the petrol to the top.
